Job summary

Stanford University Libraries is seeking a Senior Operations Engineer to join the Digital Library Systems & Services group. The role focuses on Linux-based infrastructure, virtualization, and cloud technologies to support the library's digital estate and discovery environment.

The successful candidate will design, implement, and secure multi-system platforms, while coaching team members on complex deployments and vendor management at Stanford's Palo Alto campus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus eight years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination.
  • Experience with Linux operating systems (Ubuntu/Debian preferred).
  • Proven ability to design, implement, and maintain multi-system environments.
  • Strong knowledge of security practices and disaster recovery planning.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, virtualization, and cloud technologies.
  • Ability to lead large-scale system deployment projects in a team setting.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, install, and maintain operating systems, utilities, and applications on computing systems.
  • Resolve system emergencies with significant impact on user data and systems integrity.
  • Establish security strategies, policies, and procedures for systems.
  • Plan capacity and optimize configuration for diverse services.
  • Lead and mentor other system administrators on complex deployments.
  • Manage vendor relationships and hardware/software maintenance agreements.

About the Position:

Digital Library Systems & Services (DLSS) is the directorate of Stanford Libraries charged with developing and maintaining the digital presence of the libraries. We develop applications that support the discovery, dissemination and preservation of library collections - both physical and born digital. The position is part of the operations group - the team of engineers, analysts and librarians tasked with supporting our development teams and maintaining the digital estate of the libraries. This includes the library catalog and discovery environment, our digital exhibits, the Stanford Digital Repository, and other applications, storage and backup systems, most of which run on our local virtual machine infrastructure. The successful candidate will have experience with Linux (Ubuntu/Debian preferred), infrastructure as code, virtualization, and cloud technologies. Core Duties:
  • Design, develop, install, and maintain operating systems,utilities, and applications software on computing systems.
  • Resolve system emergencies with significant impact on theintegrity of user data and systems.
  • Design, configure, implement, and maintain system securitystrategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Establish software/hardware standards and systems policies andprocedures.
  • Engage in long-term strategic planning with regard to systemsdevelopment and integration.
  • Conceptualize and implement systems within broad technical orstructural frameworks.
  • Perform capacity planning for system configuration, softwareservices, network services, load distribution, and serviceinterrelationships among computer systems.
  • Act as technical expert and mentor for local computer systemadministration.
  • Act as project leader on large-scale computing projects in whichstrong technical, directional, and personal leadership is necessary;assign and oversee the work of other system administrators asneeded.
  • Manage vendor relationships and cost-effective hardware andsoftware maintenance agreements with vendors.
Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or acombination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with complex, multi-system platforms andvendors.
  • Experience coordinating multi-system and computing environmentsin independent computing facilities.
  • Experience developing/implementing a business continuation anddisaster recovery plan.
  • Proven ability to develop appropriate plans to meet computingneeds.
  • Advanced ability to program in multiple programming languages inmultiple operating systems.
  • Proven ability to lead and work on large/complex systemdeployment projects in a team environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of security trends and bestpractices.
