Job summary

Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) is seeking a Senior Operating Engineer to securely operate and maintain the campus boiler and chiller plants, energy controls, and related systems. Shift is Sunday–Thursday, 3pm–11pm, with duties including monitoring temperatures, reviewing energy data, and performing minor repairs.

The role requires a High school diploma and experience with building systems, boilers, chillers, pumps, and safety procedures; training in CPR may be provided.

Position Number: 48008163

Working Title: SENIOR OPERATING ENGINEER

Responsibilities

The incumbent of this position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all facilities plant and campus operations. Which includes, but is not limited to, high-efficiency condensing boilers (gas fired), auxiliary boiler equipment including pumps, pressure regulators, strainers, piping, controls, package building/process boilers, chillers, cooling towers, specialty campus systems, etc.

  • Operates and maintains high-efficiency condensing boilers (gas fired), chiller plant including all auxiliary equipment. Maintains and controls operations of chiller plants. Reviews and operates campus energy controls, energy monitoring, HVAC controls. Monitors and tracks space temperatures with campus buildings making adjustments as necessary to ensure proper building operation and minimal use of utilities. Reviews graphs and trends to maintain campus utility usage goals. Assists in repairs and cleaning of all boilers, chiller plant and water treatment equipment. Responsible for keeping a clean and safe working environment in chiller and boiler plants. Maintains all campus environmental compliance during work shift.
  • Performs minor emergency repairs such as water leaks, blockages of sanitary facilities and tripped lighting current breakers. Serves on facilities campus emergency response team. Serves on facilities department improvement and safety teams as assigned.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the procedures and methods used in the operation and maintenance of heating and/or air-conditioning equipment;
  • Skill in using hand tools;
  • Skill in repairing heating and/or air-conditioning equipment;
  • Ability to operate or coordinate the operation of boilers or an air-conditioning plant;
  • Ability to conduct emergency repairs on specialized equipment/facilities (Bowling Equipment, Medical Facility, Cafeteria Equipment, etc.);
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments;
  • Ability to communicate effectively;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Ability to properly utilize computers for email, Microsoft Office, and other software as required;
  • Ability to read and understand charts, graphs, and operate complex facilities digital controls systems;
  • Ability to troubleshoot high-efficiency condensing boilers (gas fired), chillers, building systems, and associated equipment for malfunctions and repairs;
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Knowledge of computer programs to operate automated energy management systems;
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures;
  • Persons appointed to this position must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during demanding situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well‑being or that of their fellow co‑workers;
  • Ability to work in all types of weather;
  • Ability to stand, stoop, walk, lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday;
  • Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during CPR

Sign Language Requirements

Applicants who are selected for hire will be encouraged to learn American Sign Language. Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.

Hiring Salary Range (12‑month position)

$40,456.00 – $47,956.00 annually. This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

  • Base $40,456.00
  • Additional related and verified Full‑time Experience (20‑year max) addl $150.00 per year
Hours

Sunday – Thursday 3pm to 11pm
