Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide high-level nursing care for critically ill patients in a correctional setting. You will conduct health assessments, order and interpret diagnostic studies, and collaborate with physicians to develop and adjust care plans.

The role includes on-call coverage, patient and staff education, and opportunities to contribute to ongoing professional development within the Department of Corrections.

Qualifications

• Advanced clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
• Experience providing comprehensive nursing care and collaboration with physicians and healthcare teams.
• Ability to serve as a role model and mentor to staff and students.

Responsibilities

• Conducts comprehensive health histories and physical examinations, including admission procedures for critically ill patients.
• Orders radiologic and laboratory studies, interprets results, and integrates findings into care plans.
• Develops and updates daily care plans; writes orders for medications, fluids, nutrition, and respiratory support; adjusts treatment based on response.
• Performs technically demanding procedures and provides resuscitation and emergency interventions as needed.
• Records daily patient progress, prepares discharge summaries, and ensures timely documentation for continuity of care.
• Provides on-call support for physicians during night shifts with clinical expertise for urgent needs.
• Teaches and counsels patients and contributes to ongoing professional development within the clinical environment.

Education

Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing

Certification as Nurse Practitioner (SC Board of Nursing)
