Job summary

Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne, FL is seeking participants for a nursing externship. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will administer bedside patient care in inpatient/observation settings and support the care team.

You will follow infection prevention standards, collaborate with the care team, document in the EMR, and develop age-appropriate care plans while expanding your clinical skills and professionalism in a patient-centered environment.

Qualifications

• Completed junior year of nursing school or equivalent by the start of the program.
• Successful completion of clinical rotations in an accredited nursing program.
• Meets all mandatory, developmental, and performance competency requirements for Orlando Health and the specific unit/department.
• No prior professional nursing experience required.
• Prior direct patient care experience in a healthcare setting (e.g., CNA, PCT, MA, EMT, or similar role) preferred.
• Exposure to acute care or hospital-based clinical environments preferred.
• Maintains current BLS/Healthcare provider certification.

Responsibilities

• Administers bedside patient care in a hospital or inpatient/observation setting under the supervision of an assigned Preceptor in a Registered Nurse role.
• Adheres to infection prevention and control standards, including appropriate use of PPE, hand hygiene, and isolation precautions.
• Collaborates with the assigned Registered Nurse, assesses patient's needs, and develops/revises an individualized plan of care based on patient’s needs and responses.
• Promotes an inclusive and culturally sensitive environment by respecting diverse backgrounds, identities, and perspectives of patients, families, and team members.
• Communicates any patient and family advocacy issues with the assigned Registered Nurse.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care for patients served in their assigned unit/department.
• Communicates and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team under the guidance of the assigned Registered Nurse.
• Recognizes and escalates patient safety concerns, changes in condition, or urgent clinical needs to the Registered Nurse in a timely manner.
• Functions effectively as a member of the care team, demonstrating understanding of roles, responsibilities, and appropriate delegation within scope for a defined group of patients.
• Makes decisions and demonstrates behaviors associated with the 4 C's: Connection, Curiosity, Communication and Commitment.
• Maintains regular attendance and adherence to Orlando Health policies.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.
