Job summary

Averro is seeking a highly motivated Fuel Handling System Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design of fuel handling and process systems for advanced nuclear reactor projects. You will coordinate with engineers across interfaces and drive design from requirements to final delivery.

The role requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of direct experience in complex mechanical systems, particularly nuclear fuel handling, and strong technical writing and communication skills.

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical or related discipline from an accredited university with 10+ years direct experience.
• Proven experience designing complex mechanical systems, especially nuclear fuel handling.
• Experience with high temperature and multi-discipline integration is highly desired.
• Background with nuclear reactors or fuel handling processes is required.
• Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
• Ability to coordinate and lead a design team with minimal direction.
• Experience with ASME Section III and quality standards like ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001.

Responsibilities

• Design nuclear fuel handling systems and sub-systems from requirements through final design.
• Coordinate analyses reviews (thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, heat transfer) and integrate results.
• Provide design direction for thermal and fluid design requirements.
• Apply relevant design codes (ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA).
• Guide engineers in nuclear and non-nuclear design standards.
• Allocate regulatory criteria to mechanical/process system design; manage schedules.
• Create and manage drawings (P&IDs, 3D models, system interface drawings).
• Interface with mechanical, electrical, civil, and nuclear disciplines for design criteria.
• Oversee supplier projects, data deliverables, and technical reviews.
• Maintain system requirements and specifications (Engineering Design Specifications).
• Propose testing programs for plant system qualification; oversee tests.
