Job summary

VETERANS VILLAGE OF SAN DIEGO, INC. seeks a Controller to lead the Finance Department, guiding accounting, budgeting, and grant compliance for a nonprofit organization.

This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and timely reconciliations while supporting leadership, program staff, and external audits.

The Controller will oversee payroll, accounts payable, cost allocations, and financial systems with a focus on compliance and operational excellence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field; equivalent experience considered.
• Minimum five years in a senior accounting/finance role.
• Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
• Experience with fund, cost, and grant accounting; restricted funding.
• GAAP knowledge and federal grant requirements (2 CFR Part 200).
• Strong internal controls, audit prep, and reporting skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee Finance and Accounting staff and ensure accountability.
• Manage day-to-day operations: payroll, reconciliations, budgeting, grant compliance.
• Coordinate preparation of financial statements, reports, and grant/budget analyses.
• Ensure GAAP compliance, internal controls, and policy adherence.
• Support audit readiness and coordinate with external auditors.
• Maintain and update finance policies and procedures.
