Job summary

Wiley is seeking a senior data scientist to own content modeling end-to-end, building NLP pipelines over millions of journal articles and evaluating models for production use. You will collaborate with editors, product managers, and engineers to translate stakeholder needs into concrete modeling work.

You will compare traditional NLP and LLM-based approaches, optimize for speed, quality, and cost, and contribute to agentic AI applications that reason over the enriched data.

Qualifications

• Strong NLP background across modern (LLMs, transformers, embeddings, retrieval) and classical (NER, classification, sequence labeling) approaches with evaluations experience.
• Clean Python; comfortable in notebooks and production repositories with handover-ready outputs.
• Ability to defend modeling choices with evaluation results, cost estimates, and drift handling.

Responsibilities

• Design and build NLP enrichment pipelines that extract entities, classifications, claims, and summaries from scientific full-text at scale.
• Compare NLP approaches to extraction and enrichment against LLM-based methods, selecting the right tool per task with evals, cost, and ops tradeoffs.
• Own evaluation: create golden sets with SMEs and vendors, pick metrics, balance speed, quality, and cost.
• Contribute to agentic AI apps: tool-using systems that reason over enriched corpora and ground answers.
• Collaborate with editors, product managers, and engineers to translate stakeholders into concrete modeling work.
