Job description

Position Summary

The Senior Network Infrastructure Technician stages and builds local area networks in the United States and abroad and installs fiber and copper patch cabling according to NYU standards, requiring reasoning, analytical thinking, skilled creativity, and the like, to resolve issues effectively; monitors and responds to Local Area Network issues, including Layer 2 network issues, resolving, troubleshooting or escalating where appropriate; performs an array of complex network upgrades, expansions, new installations, relocations, removal of equipment, inter-building/vertical riser/structured fiber and copper patching, disconnection or patching fibers, and the like, which are in nature high risk and high impact; serves as first-line responder to troubleshoot and resolve all access Layer network connectivity issues across a wide range of devices in the United States and abroad; provides support and assistance to all departments in the United States and abroad to ensure connectivity to campus infrastructure; and performs MDF/IDF site surveys to identify existing hardware and software configurations, network connections, cooling equipment and power outlets and connections, with updates to network documentation as changes are made. May serve as a group leader, training new or junior technical staff. Complete and maintain training and certification requirements as required by OSHA and other regulatory agencies. The incumbent is an essential employee who works in a 24/7/365 environment and monitors and responds to all access layer incidents, disaster recovery, and network outages. As such, the incumbent may be required to work overnight or on weekends during outages and/or upgrades as well as to stay overnight in anticipation of severe weather conditions. The incumbent spends the majority of his/her/their time troubleshooting & resolving network related incidents/outages, including international sites, which may be assigned with or without instructions. A POA (plan of action) is developed and implemented by the incumbent and who troubleshoots without assistance before escalating to senior staff or vendor when needed, but even then continue troubleshooting in conjunction with senior staff or vendor(s). This involves significant internal and external contacts both via email and/or phone. The incumbent works independently - assesses and develops new approaches as needed and implements all of the necessary steps to resolve network issues by using reasoning, analytical abilities, and skilled creativity, while working in high pressure situations. On a daily basis, the incumbent is required to multitask, prioritize, use his/her/their best judgement to correctly resolve tasks and incidents, is responsible for the installation, support, and troubleshooting connectivity for all NYU-NET and global sites (which may include routers, switches, and more), with several miles of underground fiber cables interconnecting 3 data centers, over 300 data closets, in over 150 buildings at WSQ, and NOC network devices, 10+ locations, not limited to servers, routers, etc. which are high risk/ high impact devices/locations, providing connectivity to approximately 80,000 end-users within academic, research, and administrative departments.

Qualifications

Required Education:High School Diploma or equivalent and relevant technical training Preferred Education:Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field and CCNA Certification Required Experience:3+ years of experience deploying Local Area Networks and performing field services. Must include prior experience diagnosing and resolving Layer 2 network issues. Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:In-depth understanding of network standards and desktop/network configurations, including familiarity with Mac and Windows. Expertise with Layer 2 switching hardware and software. Intermediate knowledge with Layer 3 switching and routers hardware and software. Excellent communication skills. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize and use reasoning, analytical abilities, skilled creativity, and can work under pressure. Able to manage priorities, multitask and assign work to self, other technical support staff. Ability to serve as a resource for junior technical staff. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Ability to work with outside vendors. Intermediate knowledge of fiber-optic and copper cabling standards. Proficiency with Fluke cable testers, i.e. Fluke Toner, Visual Fault Locator, LinkRunner. Intermediate knowledge of with Cisco IOS. Working conditions may require working in hazardous environments (OSHA certification required within 3-6 months of employment). Ability to Lift weight or exert force up to 50 pounds. The incumbent works in an environment where there is high voltage. The incumbent may be required to work near moving mechanical parts, rooftops or outdoor weather conditions. The incumbent is required to work in construction sites adhering to the state of that environment. Telecom closets can be confined, work sometimes need to be in conjunction with multiple employees conducting their part of assignment. These spaces can have extreme heat or cold temperatures. Exposure to insects, rodents, droppings and trapping components. Required to work side by side with chemical containers. Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Extensive knowledge of Cisco IOS, Cisco TAC, Cisco Prime, Intermapper and intermapper remote, Confluence, Registry, Google Apps (e.g. Cal, drive, email, and more), NYU Box, MAC OS, PC, Microsoft Office, DHCP, and Infoblox. Extensive understanding of IP subnetting.

Additional Information

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is USD $40.458. This rate is based on bargaining unit contracts. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
