Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's SSRL seeks a Network Specialist to maintain and enhance network infrastructure across the user facility. You will perform routing, switching, firewall configurations and develop automated networking solutions to support accelerator operations and data acquisition.

The role requires a bachelor’s in CS and 5+ years of network administration, IPv4/IPv6, Linux, SSH, scripting, IaC, and NIST security controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field with 5 years of network administration experience.
• Ability to troubleshoot OSI layers and network issues.
• Strong IPv4/IPv6 knowledge including addressing, subnetting and routing fundamentals.
• Experience with LAN/WAN protocols and DHCP servers.
• Hands-on Linux administration and SSH management.
• Scripting to automate network tasks and backups; IaC tooling experience.
• Knowledge of fiber optic cabling and related components.
• Excellent communication to explain technical topics to non-technical users.
• Experience implementing NIST SP 800-53 security controls.

Responsibilities

• Implement routing, switching and firewall configurations under general direction.
• Develop automated IT networking solutions and monitor performance.
• Troubleshoot connectivity issues and respond to infrastructure alerts.
• Maintain catalog of network scripts and IP address management.
• Create and maintain network documentation with diagrams.
• Enhance cybersecurity posture with minimal day-to-day impact.
• Collaborate with accelerator and beamline staff to meet objectives.
• Assist with lifecycle management of networking equipment.
