Job summary

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years designing and maintaining large-scale networks.
• 5 years configuring Cisco IOS/Nexus devices.
• 5 years with Palo Alto Firewalls and Panorama.
• Experience with BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP routing.
• Experience with VPNs (IPsec) and NAT.
• Experience implementing QoS.
• Coordinate copper and fiber cabling installations.
• Supervise small teams of staff/contractors.
• Support 24/7 critical operations; public safety exp preferred.
• Experience with Splunk, ServiceNow, Jira, SolarWinds Orion, and related monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and manage Cisco Catalyst/Nexus and Palo Alto network infra.
• Troubleshoot complex issues; maintain high availability and performance.
• Perform configurations, upgrades, patches, and health checks.
• Monitor traffic and performance with network tools.
• Improve security, resiliency, scalability, and failover.
• Support Palo Alto deployments at fire stations; improve routing (OSPF/BGP).
• Coordinate equipment install and cabling at facilities.
• Provide technical leadership and mentor team members.
• Maintain network architecture docs and support capacity planning.

Position Overview

The City of Phoenix is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to design, implement, secure, and maintain the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) network supporting the Phoenix Fire Regional Dispatch Center and emergency fire and medical response operations. The role focuses on network reliability, resiliency, security, troubleshooting, and infrastructure improvements.

Required Skills

• Minimum 5 years of experience in planning, designing, and maintaining large-scale networks.


• 5 years of experience configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Cisco IOS and Cisco Nexus devices.


• 5 years of experience configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Firewalls and Panorama.


• Experience with routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP.


• Experience with point-to-point VPNs, IPsec, and NAT.


• Experience implementing Quality of Service (QoS).


• Experience coordinating copper and fiber cabling installation and troubleshooting.


• Experience supervising and directing small teams of full-time and contract employees.


• Experience supporting 24/7 critical operations; public safety experience is preferred.


• Experience with Splunk, ServiceNow, Jira, and SolarWinds Orion.


• CCNP, Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Firewall Engineer, or similar industry certifications.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and manage Cisco Catalyst, Cisco Nexus, and Palo Alto network infrastructure.


• Troubleshoot complex network issues and maintain high availability and performance.


• Perform network configurations, upgrades, patching, and routine health checks.


• Monitor network traffic and performance using network monitoring tools.


• Improve network security, resiliency, scalability, and failover performance.


• Support Palo Alto firewall deployments at fire stations and implement OSPF/BGP routing improvements.


• Coordinate equipment installation, repairs, and copper/fiber cabling at fire and partner facilities.


• Provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and coordinate with City departments and vendors.


• Maintain network architecture documentation and support capacity planning and budgeting.
