Job summary

Carbon Mapper, Inc. is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to ensure our data products meet quality, latency, and cost targets as we scale.

You will design deep learning models for remote sensing imagery, combining RGB basemaps, weather data, and GIS inventories to improve detection and infrastructure mapping. Based in the United States with a remote-friendly setup, you will own model development, deployment, monitoring, and optimization, balancing performance, latency, and cost while

Qualifications

• Advanced degree or equivalent experience in Earth Science, Atmospheric Science, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
• Experience building statistical and machine learning models using remote sensing datasets with deep learning approaches (e.g., transformers) and frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Demonstrated ability to use remote sensing imagery in deployed ML systems for detection of atmospheric gases, weather conditions, natural or agricultural ecosystems, or land use/land cover.
• Comfort adopting AI tools across the ML workflow with careful engineering review.
• Experience designing and evaluating production ML systems with metrics and validation strategies.
• Track record of diagnosing model errors, bias, drift, and failure modes in production and driving improvements.
• Experience deploying, monitoring, and maintaining models in production with observability and reproducibility.
• Experience developing scalable training and inference pipelines balancing performance, latency, and cost.
• Ability to justify ML architecture and lead experimentation efforts.
• Commitment to model explainability and interpretability for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Solid Python programming skills across the scientific/ML stack with good software practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy deep learning models for remote sensing imagery analysis, classification, and segmentation (plume detection, hyperspectral processing, infrastructure mapping).
• Integrate remote sensing and other spatial datasets to improve models and accelerate data exploration.
• Bring best practices in remote sensing and ML to cross-functional product discussions.
• Mentor team members and foster ML, data engineering, and remote sensing skills.
• Lead data-quality initiatives end-to-end across Data Operations, Science, and Engineering teams.
• Design and build automation that improves core data products' throughput and consistency.
