Job summary

Liberty Mutual Insurance in New York seeks an experienced Middle Market Senior Underwriter to underwrite commercial property and casualty risks in the middle market. You will make analytical, data-driven underwriting decisions with delegated authority and manage broker/client relationships.

The role requires regular in-person visits with local brokers and agents; remote hires outside the territory are not accommodated.

Qualifications

• Degree in Business or equivalent typically required.
• Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks.
• Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite middle market commercial accounts within assigned authority and determine accept/decline, terms, and pricing.
• Make independent, data-driven decisions on risk selection and pricing within underwriting appetite.
• Coordinate referrals for accounts above authority or needing specialized support.
• Manage a portfolio of brokers, agents, and insureds; grow relationships.
• Develop targeted broker strategies to source profitable middle market business.
• Provide timely responses to brokers and clients; negotiate coverage and terms.
• Underwrite higher-limit, complex submissions typical to middle market clients.
• Engage internal partners to structure terms and risk mitigation plans.
• Mentor and coach junior underwriters and new hires.
