Job summary

Genentech, Inc. is seeking a Scientist 3, Microscopy Specialist to provide expert guidance in optical microscopy and quantitative image analysis within CALM-EM. You will partner with project teams across therapeutic areas, guiding experimental design and data interpretation to advance drug discovery.

The role involves leading training, developing analysis workflows, and managing microscope hardware at the South San Francisco campus. Onsite presence is required, with relocation benefits available.

Qualifications

• PhD in a scientific discipline with 3+ years of hands-on microscopy experience.
• Experience teaching and onboarding users to advanced microscopy hardware and software.
• Hands-on knowledge of laser scanning confocal, spinning disk confocal, light sheet, or high-content imaging systems.
• Experience developing quantitative image analysis workflows using FIJI/ImageJ, Imaris, CellPose, or related tools.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills across diverse scientific teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-level technical consultation and experimental design across advanced imaging modalities, including confocal, live-cell imaging, organoids/complex in vitro models, tissue clearing, light sheet microscopy, and high-content screening (HCS).
• Collaborate cross-functionally with CALM-EM team members and gRED researchers to design, optimize, and execute imaging assays addressing drug discovery questions.
• Lead onboarding and hands-on training for advanced light microscopy instrumentation as a primary technical resource.
• Develop and maintain robust digital image analysis workflows and computational pipelines to extract quantitative metrics from imaging data.
• Manage and troubleshoot microscope hardware platforms in collaboration with external service vendors.
