The Senior Metrology Engineer will serve as the technical bridge between Design Engineering, Quality, and critical precision-machining suppliers as complex mechanical hardware moves toward repeatable production. The initial focus is supplier-facing: solving manufacturability and dimensional issues, interpreting complex GD&T and tolerance requirements, and ensuring suppliers are machining and measuring parts correctly. Over time, the role will increasingly help build the organization's internal metrology capability, including CMM programming, inspection methodology, equipment strategy, and team development.

Responsibilities:
  • Partner with precision-machining suppliers to resolve manufacturability, dimensional, GD&T, and inspection issues.
  • Review complex mechanical drawings, datum structures, tolerances, and mating interfaces to ensure requirements are manufacturable and measurable.
  • Perform and review GD&T and tolerance-stack analysis across critical components and assemblies.
  • Challenge impractical or ambiguous drawing requirements and work with Engineering and suppliers to develop technically sound solutions.
  • Evaluate supplier machining processes, tooling, fixturing, equipment, and measurement methods.
  • Review and validate supplier CMM programs, datum strategies, inspection plans, and measurement results.
  • Support development of CMM inspection methods that accurately translate drawing and GD&T requirements.
  • Lead or support First Article Inspection and supplier process-validation activities as designs and processes change.
  • Investigate dimensional problems and determine whether issues originate in design, machining, fixturing, or measurement.
  • Help build future internal metrology capability, including CMM programming, inspection standards, equipment selection, and supporting processes.
Required Skills:
  • Strong experience with precision machining, dimensional metrology, manufacturing engineering, supplier quality, or a closely related discipline.
  • Deep understanding of machining processes and the manufacturability of complex precision components.
  • Expert-level GD&T knowledge, including datum structures, tolerance interpretation, and the ability to challenge or defend drawing requirements.
  • Strong tolerance-stack and mating-interface analysis experience.
  • Strong CMM knowledge with the ability to review and validate supplier CMM programs and measurement methods.
  • Hands-on CMM programming experience or equivalent technical depth. Experience with PC-DMIS, Calypso, PolyWorks, MODUS, or another comparable platform is acceptable.
  • Supplier-facing technical problem-solving experience and the communication skills to confidently work through disagreements with engineers and manufacturing partners.
  • Ability to travel approximately 50% initially, with travel decreasing over time.
  • Ability to obtain the travel documents required for potential international travel.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.
Preferred Skills:
  • 5+ years of directly relevant metrology, precision machining, manufacturing engineering, or supplier quality experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • Experience designing or evaluating inspection fixtures and holding methods for complex machined parts.
  • Experience with AS9102 First Article Inspection, PPAP, supplier qualification, or source inspection.
  • Experience with Measurement Systems Analysis, including Gage R&R and measurement-system correlation.
  • Experience with calibration systems and dimensional measurement traceability.
  • Experience with advanced metrology methods such as structured-light scanning, CT inspection, form measurement, or surface metrology.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, medical device, semiconductor equipment, energy, automotive, or another high-precision manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting complex hardware from prototype or NPI through production.
  • Experience helping establish or expand an internal CMM or metrology capability.
