Job summary

Resource Consulting Engineers, LLC is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead HVAC design for commercial and institutional projects in the Ames/Des Moines, IA or Omaha, NE area. The role emphasizes hands-on design, construction documents, and client coordination with architects and contractors.

You will mentor junior engineers, manage schedules, and contribute to the growth of the mechanical engineering practice within a collaborative, client-focused firm.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
• 5+ years at an MEP consulting engineering firm or A/E design firm.
• Experience designing mechanical/MEP systems for commercial or institutional buildings.
• Project experience in education, government, and/or healthcare markets.
• Extensive hands-on experience using Autodesk Revit for building systems design and construction documents.
• Strong HVAC and mechanical building systems design experience.
• Experience with load calculations, equipment selection, and system sizing.
• Knowledge of applicable mechanical, energy, and building codes.
• Ability to coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work on-site from Ames/Des Moines, IA or Omaha, NE area.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical/HVAC design for commercial and institutional building projects.
• Design HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, and related mechanical systems.
• Perform heating and cooling load calculations, equipment sizing, and system selection.
• Develop mechanical construction documents and specifications using Autodesk Revit.
• Lead projects from conceptual design through construction administration.
• Evaluate existing mechanical systems for renovations, additions, and facility upgrades.
• Coordinate mechanical designs with electrical, architectural, structural, and other disciplines.
• Work directly with architects, owners, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
• Review contractor submittals and shop drawings.
• Respond to RFIs and provide engineering support throughout construction.
• Participate in site visits, field observations, and existing-condition assessments.
• Manage project schedules, deliverables, and client expectations.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
• Contribute to the continued growth of RCE's mechanical engineering practice.
