Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a Coding Specialist III to review and code inpatient and outpatient medical records in a high-standard, compliant manner. The role requires advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, accurate DRG assignment, and data abstraction with attention to POA, SSI, and Severity of Illness.

As a senior coding subject matter expert, you may mentor staff at levels I and II and participate in ensuring coding quality and productivity standards across the HIM Coding

Qualifications

• 3–5 years acute hospital-based coding experience.
• Remote work experience is required for PRN Coders.
• Licensure or certification in RHIA/RHIT/CCS is required on hire.

Responsibilities

• Code inpatient and outpatient records using ICD-10-CM/PCS per Official Coding Guidelines.
• Identify principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures to reflect DRG accurately.
• Abstract discharge data elements and ensure POA status and SOI/RoM accuracy.
• Flag when documentation is incomplete and route for clarification or queries.

Skills

Acute hospital coding experience

Associate or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management
