Job summary

Qualifications

• RHIT/RHIA preferred or equivalent experience.
• CCS certification required or plan to pass within 1 year of hire.
• Minimum 1 year coding experience using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 in an acute care setting.
• Internal progression may occur with CCS credential.
• Strong background in anatomy, physiology, clinical medicine and medical terminology.
• Graduate of an accredited hospital-based coding program with coursework in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology and pathophysiology/pharmacology.
• Ability to read and interpret medical terminology and apply coding skills.
• Detail oriented with basic computer skills.
• Experience with encoders and abstracting systems preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assign diagnostic and procedural codes per ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 guidelines.
• Meet quality expectations for data abstraction, coding, APC and DRG assignments.
• Meet productivity standards for the position.
• Conduct monthly data and coding quality assessments (95% accuracy).
• Assist Coding Coordinator with education programs and documentation improvement.
• Stay current with coding literature and attend seminars and trainings.
