Job summary

Cohu, Inc. in San Diego seeks a senior system engineering leader to drive architecture for complex robotic and mechatronic platforms, balancing performance, reliability, usability, and cost of ownership.

You will guide cross-functional teams through structured decision-making, drive module and platform development schedules, and ensure certification readiness. This role emphasizes architecture, risk management, and customer-facing technical leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechatronics, mechanical or electrical engineering (MSc, MEng desired).
• Minimum of 10 years system-level leadership experience in robotic/electromechanical/mechatronic systems, preferably semiconductor backend equipment.
• Minimum of 5 years as a direct engineer in a discipline.
• Proven track record in system engineering, machine concept development, and cross-discipline leadership.
• Deep understanding of thermal systems, motion control, sensor integration, and machine intelligence.
• Willingness to travel internationally up to 20%.

Responsibilities

• Translate requirements into system concepts for electromechanical platforms.
• Lead evaluation and selection of technical concepts based on functional, economic, and risk criteria.
• Ensure architectural consistency across subsystems and interfaces.
• Guide subsystem concepts, requirements, and interfaces; validate feasibility via modeling.
• Facilitate design reviews and align progress with system objectives.
• Drive risk assessments and pre-development activities.
• Ensure compliance with CE, SEMI, RoHS and support documentation.
• Support patents and protect intellectual property.
• Present solutions and resolve system-level issues with customers.
• Provide full system architectures for new concepts and customer ideation.
