U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Mechanical Shop Supervisor at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston, SC.

The role oversees HVACR, Machining, Pipefitting, Plumbing and BAS trades, ensuring safe, compliant maintenance and project execution. Responsibilities include planning work, supervising staff, coordinating schedules, managing contracts, and driving preventive maintenance programs across MORR operations and CBOCs.

Qualifications

  • Ability to interpret instructions, blueprints and specifications (including blueprints).
  • Ability to lead or supervise mechanical trades teams.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment used in HVACR, Machining, Pipefitting, Plumbing and BAS.
  • Knowledge of equipment installation, repair and assembly.
  • Knowledge of materials used in building services and mechanical systems.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) relevant to the trades.
  • Proficiency with measuring instruments to verify work.
  • EPA 608 certification is preferred for the role.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, test, adjust, balance and direct all work by HVACR, Machining, Pipefitting, Plumbing and BAS trades.
  • Maintain administrative control over subordinate positions including attendance, leave and discipline.
  • Set deadlines, train, motivate and direct staff in testing, balancing, repair, installation and troubleshooting.
  • Schedule work to minimize disruption to medical center operations and plan equipment shutdowns in advance.
  • Oversee contracts for HVACR, Machining, Pipefitting, Plumbing and BAS; develop new contracts and manage existing ones.
  • Initiate purchases for repairs and monitor contractor work and compliance with contracts.
  • Conduct performance appraisals and handle personnel actions as required.
  • Coordinate training priorities and develop training guidance for the shop.
