Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA, is seeking a dedicated Mechanical Maintenance Technician (General Maintenance Technologist) to join our Facilities Mechanical Maintenance Team, focusing on HVAC, Plumbing, and our Facility Control System (FCS). The role covers ~80 buildings across the California Site and requires onsite work with cross‑functional collaboration.

On any given day you will diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC, plumbing, and FCS; perform preventive maintenance;

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED plus five years of relevant experience.
• Experience performing general maintenance activities, including repair and maintenance of plant and/or office building structures and equipment.
• Experience with HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handling units, VFDs, and related mechanical subsystems.
• Experience with plumbing systems, including pumps, backflow preventers, valves, piping networks, and associated fixtures and equipment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
• Graduation from a Journeyman Apprenticeship Program or possession of a valid Journeyman Card (HVAC or Plumbing) or ABET-accredited program.
• EPA Section 608 Universal Certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
• Cross-Connection Specialist Certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
• Backflow Prevention Tester Certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
• Commercial Driver's License with trailer and tank endorsement. Medical certification required.
• Experience with Automated Logic WebCTRL software for building automation control.
• Experience in Facility Control System programming, operations, installation, or maintenance.
• Strong knowledge of DDC control systems and troubleshooting.
• Office software knowledge (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and CMMS).

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC, plumbing, and Facility Control Systems (FCS).
• Perform routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance on HVAC units, boilers, chillers, pumps, and plumbing fixtures.
• Use hand and power tools for repairs across multiple trades.
• Inspect facilities and equipment to identify issues and prevent downtime.
• Interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specs to guide maintenance work.
• Monitor system performance and troubleshoot irregularities; respond to service requests by priority.
• Provide guidance to facility personnel on operation and maintenance best practices.
• Collaborate with Facility Managers, System Engineers, and End Users to plan maintenance, repairs, installations, and upgrades.
• Support mechanical installation and upgrades and oversee contractor activities.
• Adhere to safety protocols and company policies.
