Job summary

SpaceX in Hawthorne, CA is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer for Starship avionics to design high‑reliability, low‑mass systems and lead cross‑functional reviews.

You will create instrumentation, perform thermal and structural analyses, and collaborate with shops to ensure producibility. The role requires a Bachelor’s in mechanical/aerospace engineering, 5+ years in mechanical/design, and proficiency with CAD/FEA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, systems engineering, or electrical engineering.
• Master’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline is preferred.
• 5+ years of professional experience with mechanical/electromechanical design, analysis, testing, and/or manufacturing.

Responsibilities

• Design custom instrumentation for extreme thermal, dynamic and pressure environments.
• Design integrated product solutions for fluid and electromechanical assemblies.
• Participate in the manufacturing line with hands-on processes including pressure testing, thermal testing, laser welding, and more.
• Perform thermal, structural, and tolerance analysis for mechanical assemblies using hand calculations and FEA.
• Create production drawings and maintain design data; initial mechanical design and 3D modeling.
• Conduct failure analysis related to thermal, loads, vibration, and shock.
• Interface with machine shops and production teams to ensure designs are producible.
• Lead design reviews and participate in reviews with suppliers and partners.
