Job summary

Muon Space in Mountain View, CA is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to be the hardware lead for instrument mechanisms, owning mechanical direction from requirements to launch-vehicle installation. You will collaborate with spacecraft, structural, thermal, electrical teams and suppliers to deliver robust hardware on schedule.

The role involves DFMA, SolidWorks, hands-on lab work, and system integration across mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing aspects in a fast-moving startup.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years designing, building, and testing high-reliability hardware.
  • B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
  • CAD proficiency (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Mastery of drawings, GD&T, BOMs, FAIs, tolerance budgets, and mass budgets.
  • Experience with ECO/DCO processes and PLM systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency leading mechanical design for complex electromechanical systems.
  • Experience technically leading or managing a small team of engineers/technicians.
  • Extensive documentation capabilities: build procedures, test plans, DOEs.
  • Experience managing external vendors for prototyping and development.
  • Experience with root cause analysis including data analysis and testing.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional coordination skills.
  • Experience with system integration and delivery of hardware/software systems.

Responsibilities

  • Have a deep understanding of Muon’s spacecraft platforms and capabilities.
  • Own moving mechanism assemblies: design, sizing, assembly, performance characterization, and lifetime testing.
  • Lead DFMA/DFM efforts to support continuous improvement and volume production.
  • Create, analyze, and refine mechanism mechanical designs in SolidWorks.
  • Support control algorithm development and tuning with cross-functional teams.
  • Lead mechanical portion of internal and external design reviews.
  • Support environmental testing campaigns including vibration and TVAC.
  • Interface with structural, thermal, instrument and spacecraft systems engineers and program managers.
