Job summary

Slingshot Aerospace is seeking a senior mechanical engineer to lead hardware design for ground-based electro-optical space surveillance systems. You will design enclosures, mounts, and optomechanical hardware, ensuring reliability in harsh environments and coordinating with optics, electronics, and software teams.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years of relevant experience designing and delivering mechanical hardware in demanding applications.
• Significant experience with 3D CAD and fabrication-ready drawings.
• Experience taking mechanical systems from concept through design, fabrication and deployment.
• Experience designing for outdoor, harsh environments and extreme temperatures.
• Strong understanding of structural design, materials, tolerancing, GD&T, fasteners, joints, and manufacturing processes.
• Experience performing structural, thermal, tolerance, and dynamics analyses.

Responsibilities

• Execute mechanical design and hardening for space surveillance systems.
• Develop enclosures, mounts, frames, optical benches, and precision assemblies.
• Lead design for operation in polar and extreme environments (cold, wind, ice).
• Develop maintainable hardware with reliable lubrication, sealing, and cable management at low temperatures.
• Collaborate with optical, electrical, software, and field teams to deliver integrated sensing systems.
• Create fabrication-ready drawings, tolerances, GD&T, BOMs, and assembly docs.
• Engage with machine shops and vendors to turn designs into hardware.
• Prototype and lead assembly, integration, and verification of systems.
• Support environmental testing and field deployments.
