Job summary

Applied Atomics is building the next generation of nuclear energy infrastructure. We seek a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own the balance-of-plant systems for our FOAK nuclear plant, including main steam, feedwater, condensate, and air-cooled condenser systems, from concept through commissioning.

The role emphasizes end-to-end thermal and fluid design, vendor engagement, testing, and regulatory support in a remote-friendly USA environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 10+ years of mechanical or fluid system design experience (7+ years with MS).
• Strong proficiency in fluid/thermal-mechanical design, hand calcs, and FEA.
• Experience with piping, pressure vessels, steam cycle equipment, and industrial fluid systems.
• Familiarity with ASME, API, NRC, NFPA codes.

Responsibilities

• Own major balance-of-plant (BOP) systems, including main steam, feedwater, condensate, ACC, heat exchangers.
• Lead trade studies and system architecture decisions to meet performance, reliability, safety, and cost targets.
• Develop design concepts for BOP structures, systems, and components (SSCs).
• Perform thermal, structural, and fluid analyses with hand calcs and FEA/CFD tools.
• Support procurement, vendor engagement, and testing activities.
• Ensure designs comply with industry codes and safety analyses.
• Manage system development through all life cycle phases.
• Coordinate with interfacing system owners.
• Create design documentation and BOMs; support regulatory submissions.
