Job summary

Engtal in Richmond, VA, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead complex building systems while staying technically hands-on. The role involves designing HVAC, central plants, plumbing, and controls, mentoring junior engineers, and coordinating multi-office teams on federal, state, university, and commercial projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related accredited discipline.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
• 8–14 years of Mechanical Engineering experience.
• Experience with HVAC, central plants, ventilation, plumbing, and building automation and controls.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical load calculations, equipment sizing, and energy-efficient design.
• Prior MEP/consulting engineering experience preferred.
• Federal building design experience is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Design complex mechanical building systems across HVAC, central plants, and controls.
• Lead project teams and deliver comprehensive mechanical design packages.
• Perform load calculations, equipment sizing, and system analysis.
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, PMs, contractors, and clients throughout delivery.
• Provide technical oversight and mentoring to junior staff.
• Support projects through construction administration and commissioning.
• Improve internal standards and technical quality across offices.
• Deliver projects for federal, state, universities, and commercial clients.
