Job summary

Fourier seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design, analysis, integration, and validation of modular hydrogen production systems. This role spans mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing interfaces, co-owning DFM/DFA strategies and ensuring safe, thermally managed packaging for HV/LV electronics.

You will own CAD design, perform first-principles calculations, and collaborate with partners to deliver robust enclosures and BoP documentation for scalable electrolyzer systems.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; 6+ years of relevant experience in commercial product design and development.
• First-principles understanding of statics, mechanics, materials science, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics.
• Extensive experience taking mechanical designs from concept through production, including prototype builds and manufacturing release.
• Proven experience in DFM/DFA with manufacturing partners to optimize designs for producibility, assembly, and reliability.
• Demonstrated experience packaging and integrating electromechanical systems involving both HV and LV electrical components.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks strongly preferred) and Thermal & Structural FEA tools.
• Strong hands-on aptitude in lab, shop, and test rig environments.
• Experience creating GD&T-compliant 2D fabrication drawings (ASME Y14.5).
• Preferred: Advanced degree; PEM electrolysis or related systems; gas piping experience; PLM familiarity.

Responsibilities

• Lead concept development, design trades, and down-select decisions for all mechanical subsystems from water purification through post-production H2 purification.
• Own 3D CAD design of complex parts and assemblies using SolidWorks or equivalent; cover sheet metal, plastics, insulation, sealing, connectors, and fasteners.
• Review and develop process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and mechanical design documentation.
• Perform first-principles hand calculations for sizing and performance of fluid, thermal, and structural systems.
• Collaborate with electrical/electronics teams to integrate HV/LV systems into mechanical enclosures.
• Design packaging solutions for HV assemblies, ensuring insulation, creepage/clearance, and thermal management.
• Develop cooling technologies for stacks, power electronics, and ancillary components.
• Ensure enclosure designs meet electrical safety standards (UL, IEC, NFPA).
• Define ICDs between mechanical and electrical subsystems.
• Embed DFM/DFA principles with manufacturing partners from concept to production release.
• Create and maintain BoP documentation including BOMs, P&IDs, and fluid specs.
• Hands-on with hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen piping systems; leak testing protocols.
• Develop test plans and lead lab test activities for reliability and safety.
• Maintain PLM documentation including BOMs, drawings, and FMEAs.
