Job summary

SmithGroup's San Diego office seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead HVAC design across projects, mentor staff, and help win work through strong engineering and collaboration.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s in mechanical/architectural engineering, 10+ years of experience, PE, LEED AP preferred, and proficiency in Revit and energy modeling. The role offers a hybrid schedule and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 10 years of experience working as a mechanical engineer designing HVAC, sustainable design and automatic control systems, including experience performing energy modeling.
• LEED AP preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) registration required.
• The ability to lead and mentor others in area of expertise.
• Demonstrate experience in improving project energy performance.
• Working knowledge of the design and construction process and the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines.
• Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and Microsoft Office Suite software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealing with internal and external clients.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering through all stages of projects and contribute to marketing and studio management.
• Promote energy efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in projects.
• Establish goals, budgets and schedules; track performance and enforce quality control.
• Meet with clients and project teams to address mechanical issues and build relationships.
• Present engineering solutions to clients and design review committees.
• Research and devise solutions as a mechanical systems specialist.
• Perform energy, heating/cooling load and CFD calculations using appropriate software.
• Collaborate on tools to evaluate system efficiency and decarbonization performance.
• Lead HVAC design and documentation.
• Mentor junior staff and participate in performance coaching.
• Participate in recruitment and interviews when requested.
