Job summary

Sarmal, Inc. in San Diego is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to own the instrument's mechanical and electromechanical architecture for our point-of-care diagnostic platform.

This hands-on senior role drives design from concept to product launch and supports ongoing production. You will set technical direction for outsourced partners, manage CDMOs, and lead engineering practices as the hardware team grows.

Qualifications

• Proven track record designing electro-mechanical, fluidic, optical, and thermal systems across product life cycles.
• Experience with fluidically driven systems, microfluidics, or molecular diagnostics.
• Experience designing or supporting custom consumables and their alignment mechanisms.
• Ability to own system-level architecture across fluidics, optics, mechatronics, and electronics.
• Proven DF(M) and DF(M) proficiency across injection molding, machining, and automated assembly.

Responsibilities

• Translate assay and user requirements into robust hardware architectures and subsystem specs.
• Lead instrument development from concept through transfer, launch, and sustaining support.
• Oversee design and integration of fluidics, motion, thermal modules, optics, and mechatronics.
• Own design of consumables and disposable cartridges with alignment and registration mechanisms.
• Develop precise thermal modules for amplification and automated motion systems.
• Perform hands-on breadboarding, prototypes, and reliability test development.
