Job summary

Sarmal, Inc. in San Diego invites applications for a Senior Research Associate to drive systems integration for our molecular diagnostics platform.

This role sits at the interface of molecular biology and engineering, translating bench-scale processes into automated, sample-to-answer workflows for instrument platforms and consumables. You will collaborate with Assay Development, Reagent Chemistry, Device/Instrument Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality/Regulatory teams to optimize fluidics,

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or related field
• 5+ years of relevant industry experience or equivalent
• Hands-on experience with immature hardware and iterative design cycles
• Fluorescence imaging and/or fluorescence spectroscopy instrumentation
• Experience with fluidic and flow cell–based systems
• Experience in regulated environments (GMP, ISO 13485, FDA design controls) and design history files

Responsibilities

• Build, characterize, and iterate on early prototype instrument and consumable systems with cross-functional teams
• Lead integration testing, risk analysis, and troubleshooting across development cycles
• Characterize consumable performance across lots and design iterations
• Support fluidics and flow cell-based system troubleshooting and design improvements
• Operate fluorescence-based detection systems and evaluate performance metrics
• Translate bench-scale processes into integrated workflows for instrument platforms
• Define and execute integration testing protocols spanning fluidics, electronics, and assay chemistry
• Maintain rigorous documentation for design history files and regulatory submissions
• Collaborate with quality and regulatory to align with GMP/ISO/FDA design controls
• Contribute to design-for-manufacturability and design-for-reliability discussions
• Collaborate to transition surface chemistry processes from R&D to pilot scale and IVD manufacturing
• Design and execute DOEs to optimize coating uniformity and stability; support CAPAs
• Author technical reports, batch records, and DHF/design control documentation
• Support IP strategy and patent disclosures
• Present data and recommendations to cross-functional teams
