Job summary

Sarmal, Inc. seeks a Principal Optical Engineer in San Diego to own the optical architecture of our next‑generation DNA sequencing platform.

You will drive design, simulation, tolerancing, alignment, and characterization of a high‑sensitivity detection system, partnering with CRO/CDMO teams for manufacturability. The role requires leading architecture decisions, performing Zemax analyses, and coordinating with mechanical, software, and manufacturing teams to deliver a scalable instrument from

Qualifications

• Minimum of 10 years in optical engineering or optical system design with commercialized products.
• Expert in Zemax OpticStudio, sequential and non-sequential modeling, optimization, and tolerancing.
• Hands-on experience on optical workbench, alignment, testing, and characterization.

Responsibilities

• Define the optical architecture and long-term strategy for high-throughput DNA sequencing platforms.
• Lead end-to-end design, modeling, and optimization of the optical system for the sequencer.
• Develop breadboard systems and perform Proof-of-Concept experiments before system integration.
• Perform optical design, ray tracing, tolerance and stray-light analyses to meet specs.
