Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for the Factory Automation Group on Merritt Island. Lead design of custom automation systems, fixtures, and robotic tooling, and collaborate with controls, software, and manufacturing teams to deliver complete solutions.

You will create 3D models and drawings, maintain BOMs, and ensure designs meet safety and manufacturability standards while continually improving system performance and reliability.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design for automation, robotics, or industrial equipment environment.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software with PDM.
  • Strong understanding of machine design, motion systems and pneumatic actuators.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, and assembly.
  • Familiarity with robotic systems and end-of-arm tooling design.
  • Understanding of safety and ergonomic standards for industrial automation.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for customer support and system installations.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, custom automation environment.
  • Ability to interpret and review electrical drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Design custom mechanical systems and assemblies for automation equipment, including tooling, fixtures, robotic cells, and mechanical sub-systems.
  • Create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using NX Design, SolidWorks, PTC Creo or similar software.
  • Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements and deliver complete solutions.
  • Ensure mechanical designs meet functional requirements, manufacturability standards, safety codes, and ergonomic guidelines.
  • Participate in design reviews, prototyping, testing, and system integration.
  • Support fabrication, assembly, and installation phases of automation projects.
  • Provide support for project life cycle, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer interface.
  • Research and apply new materials, components, and technologies to improve system performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Improve existing systems for optimal performance and reliability.
