Job summary

Cushing Terrell is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer in Bend, OR to lead design of central utility plants and district energy systems. You will drive feasibility studies, master plans, and project execution from concept through construction administration, mentoring junior staff along the way.

You will work with healthcare, higher education, government, and industrial clients, ensuring reliability, decarbonization, and cost-conscious solutions while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
• 10+ years of job-related experience, including designing central utility plants, district energy systems, boiler plants, and steam distribution networks
• Ability to independently lead planning, analysis, and design of medium- and high-pressure steam generation and distribution, condensate return, and hot/chilled water generation and distribution systems
• Advanced understanding of codes and standards (ASME B31.1, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, National Board, NFPA, IMC)
• Proficiency developing PFDs, P&IDs, control narratives, sequences of operation, and knowledge of building automation and steam plant controls
• Advanced knowledge of Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

• Lead the planning, assessment, and design of central utility plants, district energy systems, and medium- and high-pressure steam infrastructure for multiple facility types
• Develop utility master plans, feasibility studies, and condition assessments addressing modernization, electrification, and expansion with reliability and decarbonization goals
• Produce designs including calculations, equipment selections, layouts, PFDs, P&IDs, control strategies, and construction documents
• Oversee pipe stress analysis and capital cost estimates; sign and seal engineering documents as Engineer of Responsible Charge
• Manage project scope, schedule, and team workload while coordinating with architects, structural, electrical, and civil engineers, contractors, and vendors
• Provide construction administration, site visits, RFIs, commissioning support, startup coordination, and closeout
• Mentor engineers and designers, contribute to internal standards, and support business development through proposals and client relationships
