Job summary

Koch Finishing Systems in Caledonia, MI, near the Grand Rapids area, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and deliver custom automated finishing systems—from concept through startup on site.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years in capital equipment design, proficiency in SolidWorks or Inventor, and a solid grasp of GD&T, tolerances, and material selection. Travel for installations and commissioning is required.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited mechanical engineering degree required.
• Minimum 5 years of engineering experience with custom automated machinery.
• Experience with structural/mechanical analysis, material selection, tolerance stack-up, and failure analysis.
• Knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, servo/precision motion, and sheet metal or weldment design.
• Experience with tanks, platforms, piping, or material handling equipment; plating or anodizing experience a plus.
• CAD proficiency (SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor); PLM/PDM a plus.
• Knowledge of GD&T and DFM/DFA principles.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, and assembly.

Responsibilities

• Engineer custom automated capital equipment including plating/anodizing lines and material handling systems.
• Perform structural, mechanical, and thermal calculations to support design decisions.
• Translate customer requirements into functional, manufacturable equipment solutions.
• Collaborate with controls, project managers, and fabrication teams to deliver integrated systems.
• Own mechanical scope from concept through fabrication, installation, and commissioning.
• Produce 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings (SolidWorks, Inventor).
• Evaluate budgets and timelines to develop effective engineering solutions.
• Participate in customer reviews and support project scheduling with the PM team.
