Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Engineering team in Berkeley, CA. The role focuses on managing and improving campus mechanical systems, diagnosing issues, and enhancing safety, efficiency, and reliability.

You will lead design, troubleshooting, and project support across disciplines. The ideal candidate has extensive HVAC/plumbing experience, strong problem-solving and communication skills, and a collaborative approach in a complex,

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field
• 8+ years in construction, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems (6+ years with Master’s)
• Experience with HVAC/plumbing design, load and pressure drop calculations, and equipment sizing
• Strong ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues using trend reviews and diagnostics
• Proficiency reading and redlining mechanical drawings and specifications

Responsibilities

• Serve as SME for mechanical, plumbing, and specialty plumbing systems
• Lead problem-solving efforts and set priorities with stakeholders
• Conduct equipment failure investigations and performance reviews
• Develop conceptual designs and scopes of work for improvements
• Specify equipment replacements to improve performance and cost-effectiveness
• Improve system documentation, diagrams, and procedures
• Support infrastructure planning and capital investment recommendations
• Utilize CMMS to manage work orders and asset history
• Coordinate with external consultants/contractors as needed
• Maintain master specifications and design guidelines
• Support design/construction projects through scopes, reviews, submittals, and commissioning
