Job summary

Berkeley Lab in Berkeley, CA seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead and optimize campus mechanical systems, troubleshoot issues, and support world-class science projects. You will serve as SME for mechanical, plumbing, and specialty systems, drive problem-solving, coordinate with stakeholders, and ensure safety, reliability, and compliance with codes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years in construction, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems (6+ years with a Master’s).
  • HVAC, plumbing, and complex system knowledge in research environments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical issues via trend review and diagnostics.
  • Interpret, redline, and sketch mechanical drawings and specs.
  • HVAC/plumbing design including load calculations and equipment sizing.
  • Understand HVAC control sequences and analyze system data for reliability.
  • Lead engineering outcomes in a matrix/owners-rep context without direct supervision.
  • Strong communication; commitment to safety and professional conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME for mechanical, plumbing, and specialty plumbing systems.
  • Lead problem-solving efforts and set priorities with stakeholders.
  • Conduct failure investigations, performance reviews, and testing.
  • Evaluate system spare capacity for equipment installations.
  • Develop conceptual designs and scopes of work with cross-discipline coordination.
  • Specify equipment replacements for performance and cost benefits.
  • Improve documentation, diagrams, and procedures to reflect current conditions.
  • Support infrastructure planning and modernization for leadership decisions.
  • Use CMMS to manage work orders and track asset history and trends.
  • Collaborate with external consultants/contractors on assessments and replacements.
  • Maintain master specs, design guidelines, and standard details.
  • Support design/construction with scope, reviews, submittals, RFIs, walkthroughs, and commissioning.
