Job Description:
Saab Inc., Autonomous and Undersea Systems division is seeking an innovative and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to guide technical teams in capturing, understanding, and implementing product design requirements for autonomous Unmanned Surface/Underwater Vehicles (aUSVs/aUUVs, AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). This position will be based in our Quincy, MA facility.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conceive, develop, and analyze mechanical components, assemblies, and systems.
- Apply fundamentals of mechanical engineering to create innovative solutions.
- Present and discuss technical concepts, tradeoffs, analyses, designs, and performance estimates.
- Interface with Systems Engineering and other disciplines to develop and implement customer requirements.
- Follow through on the full product lifecycle: development, prototyping, integration, verification, delivery, and support, including operations and sea-testing.
- Incorporate best practices for mechanical engineering and Design for Cost & Manufacturability.
- Identify, manage, and solve problems related to mechanical engineering work products.
- Resolve design, supplier quality, manufacturing, and field issues using experience and knowledge.
- Create and modify assembly drawings, vendor control drawings, connection diagrams, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for entire systems, including electronics.
- Follow company SOPs and Quality System requirements.
- Plan, organize, and estimate effort for tasks, including writing Basis of Estimates (BOEs) if necessary.
- Work collaboratively within a team environment to achieve goals.
- Support mentoring and development of engineering staff.
Compensation Range:
$118,900 - $154,600. This range is a guideline; actual offer factors include role responsibilities, location, market conditions, candidate experience, skills, and education.
Skills and Experience:
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Master’s preferred.
- 8+ years of relevant experience in advanced mechanical design, with broad application and understanding of the product development lifecycle.
- Knowledge of industry design methods, tradeoff analysis, test data analysis, and change management processes.
- Strong product development background with problem-solving skills.
- Experience using SolidWorks, Solid Edge, ANSYS (a plus), MS Office Suite for creating drawings, documents, and presentations.
- Ability to review mechanical drawings for GD&T, accuracy, and completeness.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven team contributor with leadership capabilities where applicable.
- Ability to work independently to meet requirements.
- Capability to collaborate with other disciplines in a development environment.
- Must hold or be able to obtain a U.S. DoD SECRET security clearance.
- Willingness to travel up to 25%, domestically and internationally.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Experience with DoD or U.S. government clients.
- Background in hardware development for Naval and Marine applications.
- Familiarity with Military Standards, ruggedized design, and environmental testing.
- Knowledge of materials, corrosion control, and thermal management, including industry-standard practices.
- Experience with autonomous surface and underwater systems design and development.
- Skills in thermal modeling and hybrid packaging design.
