Job summary

Aegis Sortation is seeking a senior mechanical engineer to support technical project execution using systems engineering principles. You will mentor peers, manage project deliverables, and ensure design compliance with standards while collaborating across design, project engineering, and customers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering or equivalent; education may be substituted by equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical conveyor / installation design.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and/or other 3D CAD software.
  • Ability to lead projects with a few team members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel ~15%.

Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering theory to problems in industrial layout and design.
  • Interpret engineering sketches, specifications, or drawings.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, project engineers and project managers to meet requirements.
  • Establish an engineering design plan and schedule for the project.
  • Create and edit material handling system designs using Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Prepare drawings, BOMs, and specifications for machines and components.
  • Lead internal design reviews and provide feedback to the team.
  • Travel to customer facilities for site surveys and as-built condition documentation.

About The Role

The senior mechanical engineer is responsible for supporting the development and execution of technical projects by applying systems engineering principles, collaborating cross-functionally, and ensuring high-quality deliverables. This role involves managing projects and ensuring accountability for all project deliverables. The senior mechanical engineer supports the organization’s vision and core values through mentorship, leadership, adherence to schedule requirements, commitment to quality and a make it better culture.

What You’ll Do
  • Apply engineering theory and principles to problems of industrial layout and design.
  • Interpret engineering sketches, specifications, or drawings.
  • Research / review customer specifications to understand requirements and ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with project team members including design engineers, project engineers and project managers and customers to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Work with design team to establish an engineering design plan and schedule for the project.
  • Ensure design compliance with Aegis and customer standards.
  • Research / review available as-built drawings.
  • Research / review available architectural drawings.
  • Travel to customer facilities to conduct site surveys and document as-built conditions.
  • Utilize 3D CAD software (Revit) and/or AutoCAD to create and edit material handling system designs.
  • Develop general arrangement drawings (high level equipment layouts).
  • Produce mechanical installation detail drawings, including plan views, elevations, cross-sections and bills of materials.
  • Specify components and materials required as per the design.
  • Prepare specifications, designs, or sketches for machines, components, or materials as required.
  • Check drawings and models and provide feedback to the design team.
  • Make drawing corrections / revisions as needed to meet the project requirements.
  • Report on drawing status on a regular cadence, maintaining the project schedule.
  • Prepare drawing packages and transmittals for customer reviews.
  • Attend trainings to enhance professional and technical knowledge.
  • Mentor and inspire peers and junior team members.
  • Help the team stay on track by supporting task execution and time management.
  • Lead internal design reviews for assigned projects; bringing together representatives from multiple disciplines to review system design, identify risks, incorporate feedback, and support successful project delivery.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering, Computer Drafting and Design or similar technical program. Equivalent work experience will also be considered a substitute for education.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical conveyor / installation design.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and/or other 3D CAD software
  • Ability to lead projects with a few team members
  • Proficient in Windows operating system environment with working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively both in writing and verbally
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a cross-functional / multi-disciplined team
  • Ability to work within deadlines; focus and perform work accurately
  • Ability to and experience mentoring junior team members
  • Ability to recognize when additional expertise is needed and escalates appropriately
  • Must be adaptable to changing priorities
  • Willingness to travel, typically 15%
