Job summary

Genesis AEC in Medford, MA seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead a design team delivering complex HVAC and utility systems for pharmaceutical and biotech facilities.

You will oversee calculations, field surveys, and multi-disciplinary coordination to ensure compliant, high-quality outcomes; mentoring staff and supporting business development and client relations are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 10+ years of relevant experience with increasing responsibilities
• Deep familiarity with Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Life Science, and Laboratory industries
• Proficiency in computerized HVAC load calculation and energy software
• Proven ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships and contribute to business development
• Expertise in Mechanical systems design and engineering (chilled water plants, boilers, AHUs, DX systems)
• Proficiency with MS Office and Adobe Professional software
• Strong leadership and collaboration skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee a mechanical design team to ensure high-quality project delivery
• Drive development and review of complex engineering calculations (HVAC load, hydraulic modeling, isometrics)
• Coordinate field surveys and HVAC/Central Utility layouts with project engineers and designers
• Collaborate with architects, clients, operations, and contractors for cohesive project integration
• Conduct facility infrastructure assessments and energy code evaluations
• Develop airflow diagrams, pressurization, zoning, and classification plans for pharma and life sciences
• Develop equipment specifications aligned with company standards and client/vendor requirements
• Review equipment submittals and shop drawings; respond to RFIs; manage punch lists
• Assist Chief Automation Engineer in Instrumentation and Control design for mechanical systems

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

• Lead and oversee a mechanical design team consisting of Project Engineers and Designers to ensure high-quality project delivery.
• Drive the development and review of complex engineering calculations, including HVAC load calculations, fan static pressure analysis, hydraulic calculations/modeling, and isometric analyses by Project Mechanical Engineers.
• Coordinate scheduling of field surveys and support the development of HVAC and Central Utility system layout and design, in collaboration with theProject Mechanical Engineer and Mechanical Designers.
• Coordinate closely with multi-disciplinary teams – including architects, other engineering disciplines, client representatives, facility operations, and contractors – to ensure cohesive project integration.
• Conduct facility infrastructure assessments, infrastructure/utility master planning, and perform code and energy evaluations.
• Lead the development of airflow diagrams, pressurization plans, zoning plans, and classification plans for Pharmaceutical and Life Science applications.
• Lead the development of equipment specifications, based on company standards, and in coordination with specific client and equipment vendor requirements.
• Manage the review of equipment submittals and shop drawings, prepare timely responses to RFI’s, and create punch list development and resolution.
• Assist the Chief Automation Engineer in the development of Instrumentation and Control Design for Mechanical systems.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 10+ years of relevant experience with increasing responsibilities
• Deep familiarity with Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Life Science, and Laboratory industries, with insight into client priorities, compliance standards, and market dynamics
• Proficiency in computerized HVAC load calculation and energy software
• Proven ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships and contribute to business development initiatives, including identifying project opportunities and supporting proposal efforts.
• Expertise in Mechanical systems design and engineering, including chilled water plants, steam and hot water boiler plants, custom and semi-custom air handling units, direct expansion (DX) system design, pumps, duct and air distribution systems, piping systems, and DDC control systems.
• Proficiency with MS Office and Adobe Professional software
• Strong leadership and collaboration skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with client-facing roles and proposal development
• Demonstrated ability to mentor junior staff in client relationship development and support their involvement in business development activities
• PE License
