Saco, Maine | On-site | $100-130k+ DOE | US Citizen / Green Card only
This is a rare opportunity to join a world-class precision optics team developing next-generation medical endoscopes and imaging systems. You'll work at the intersection of mechanical design, materials science, and high-precision assembly — taking products from early concept all the way through to production on devices that reach patients.
Our client is a growing North American division of a globally established photonics company with over 65 years of heritage. The Saco site is a small, focused engineering team. It’s the kind of environment where your fingerprints are on every product and every decision matters.
Experience required:
5–7 years product development in a high-precision industry
Education:
BSc Mechanical Engineering required; MSc preferred
THE ROLE
What you'll be doing
- Lead mechanical design and development of precision optomechanical assemblies, from first concept through to validated production-ready designs.
- Work directly with customers to translate clinical and engineering requirements into robust design specifications — real customer engagement from day one.
- Hands-on prototyping, assembly, and test — this is a bench-level role as much as a design role, especially during early development phases.
- Own design documentation within a QMS environment (ISO 13485), and drive design transfer to manufacturing with full DFM/DFA principles.
- Develop joining, bonding, and sealing processes for small, complex assemblies — including work under a microscope with a high focus on cleanliness and precision.
- Contribute to optical testing and metrology processes — MTF, Imatest, depth of field — supporting image quality validation for wide-angle medical scopes.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on your projects, managing engineering deliverables across multiple programmes at different stages simultaneously.
Five things that matter most
- You've taken high-precision products from concept through to production — in medtech, aero, defence, or similar.
- 2. Small-part joining, bonding & assembly Epoxy joining, metal bonding, welding/soldering awareness, and a deep instinct for cleanliness. Comfortable working at small scale, under a microscope.
- 3. GD&T for tight-tolerance, small-scale parts Strong GD&T (ASME Y14.5) for the kind of thin-walled, small-format components that demand precision at every stage of design and assembly.
- 4. Regulated industry documentation You're not afraid of a QMS. ISO 13485, FDA design controls, or defence equivalents — you own your documentation, not hand it off.
You ask questions, learn fast, and will defend your engineering position when you know you're right. This team wants a peer, not an order-taker.
- – Optical test exposure; MTF, Imatest, slanted edge, depth of field; Zemax or Code V a strong plus
- – Multi-project management experience — keeping a lower-priority programme moving without letting it stall
What's on offer
- Salary from $100-130K, commensurate with experience
- 100% employer-paid health, dental and vision insurance
- Company HSA contribution
- STD, LTD and life insurance
- 401k with 4% company match, 100% vested from day one
- Generous PTO including parental leave
- Flexible, professional working environment
- Global parent company backing — local, small-team culture
