Project Overview

Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States by far – enough to power 1 million electric vehicles per year.

As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team contractors engineering and building the facility. We are also managing procurement of about $1 Billion in goods and services.

Earth work began in 2023 and design and procurement of long-lead equipment is underway.

The project is located in the high desert and wide-open spaces of north-central Nevada about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 3 hours northeast of Reno.

Planned with sustainability and the environment in mind, the facility will use its excess process heat to generate electricity and will recycle process water up to seven times. Once the second phase of the project is complete, Thacker Pass will produce more than 16 times the current U.S. output of lithium.

Job Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for the Mining & Metals team on a lithium mine to join our EPCM team based in Houston. The position will be responsible for assigned activities within an engineering discipline in a global business unit. Applying broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project engineering in the preparation of engineering analyses, making decisions concerning problems within the discipline on the project, and representing the discipline on the project and with the Client as directed to resolve technical questions.

Major Responsibilities

• Provide technical and commercial support for main process mechanical equipment packages (e.g. crystallisation), interface with 3rd party suppliers, including working with project controls and procurement to manage supplier packages;
• Directly interface with the client for critical large mechanical and/or multidiscipline packages;
• Mentor, supervise and be responsible for part of the mechanical project team;
• Evaluates, selects, and applies standard mechanical engineeringmethods, techniques, procedures and criteria for a medium size project or assignment that includes the preparation of originaldesigns layouts, details, drawings and specifications ;
• Designs, develops, modifies, and evaluates mechanical components andprocesses utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), designstandards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs)
• Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs,reports or proposals
• Coordinates mechanical engineering efforts in assigned areas withspecialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor,contractors, construction and other functional groups ;
• When delegated, provides guidance to other mechanical engineeringpersonnel for specific tasks;
• Provides technical assistance to other mechanical personnel andinteract with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agencypersonnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues;
• Provides assistance toproject and construction management inidentifying and complying with project mechanical requirements and inaddressing issues as they arise during project execution ;
• Mentors and assists more junior mechanical team members .
  
  

Education And Experience Requirements

• Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and greater than 20 years of relevant experience.
  
  

Required Knowledge And Skills

• Experience with lithium mining and process plants;
• Experience coordinating mechanical teams;
• Ability to plan, schedule and determine required resources to support multidiscipline packages;
• Understanding of fire systems and the typical methods used to develop fire systems is preferred.
