Join to apply for the Senior Mechanical Engineer role at Berkeley Lab.

Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to oversee medium to large projects involving complex mechanical tasks such as design, manufacturing planning, and quality assurance. The role entails managing large or multiple small projects, often related to particle accelerators, optics, beamline design, magnetic, cryogenic, and vacuum systems. This is a matrix position requiring flexibility in assignments.

What You Will Do:
  • Utilize CAD and FEA tools for design tasks.
  • Resolve project issues independently using engineering principles.
  • Develop practical solutions for small projects, integrating new technologies.
  • Provide guidance to staff as needed.
  • Prepare design specifications, analyses, and recommendations for management approval.
  • Conduct developmental work and write technical reports.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and scientists to clarify requirements.
  • Develop detailed designs for scientific equipment and experimental setups using CAD and FEA tools.
  • Oversee engineering, procurement, fabrication, and assembly efforts.
  • Assist proactively in resolving issues beyond immediate responsibilities.
  • Collaborate across divisions and scientific teams on engineering aspects.
  • Manage technical integration of subsystems, requirements, interfaces, and risks.
  • Develop project timelines and budgets.
  • Coordinate presentations for committees.
  • Ensure safety compliance and implement quality assurance policies.
  • Contribute to conferences and publications.
Additional Responsibilities for Level 4:
  • Lead cross-functional project teams and manage day-to-day operations.
  • Manage technical integration, procurement, and project schedules.
  • Recruit, hire, and manage staff.
  • Contribute to conference presentations and publications.
What Is Required:
  • BS in engineering + 5+ years or Master’s + 3+ years relevant experience, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and manufacturing technical aspects.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
  • Understanding of project development and quality systems.
  • Extensive mechanical engineering knowledge and proven ability to lead complex projects.
Additional for Level 4:
  • 8+ years with BS or 6+ with Master’s, or equivalent.
  • Experience in designing hardware for scientific experiments and managing small teams.
  • Proficiency in CAD, project estimation, scheduling, and management tools.
  • Strong collaborative and problem-solving skills in multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Supervisory experience, composite design, and precision manufacturing.
  • Experience in R&D environments, large-scale scientific equipment, and systems engineering.
Salary:

Level 3: Targeted $130K–$158K; Range $115K–$194K. Level 4: Targeted $157K–$192K; Range $139K–$236K.
