Job Description

Responsible for applying mechanical design and engineering skills to a variety of diverse and challenging projects throughout Alaska’s utility, commercial, and industrial markets in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform lead mechanical engineer responsibilities for design projects.
  • Perform process piping and HVAC system designs.
  • Perform mechanical design calculations and reports.
  • Perform mechanical equipment sizing and selections.
  • Use computer-assisted engineering and design software to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Serve as a project engineer on larger projects.
  • Serve as a project manager and client contact on smaller projects.
  • Prepare design computations and quantity estimates.
  • Attend client meetings.
  • Analyze reports, drawings, blueprints, maps, and tests to plan and design projects.
  • Prepare or modify reports, specifications, plans, and schedules for design projects.
  • Instruct draftspersons/technicians to convert designs into working drawings.
  • Visit construction sites to monitor progress.
  • Ensure timely completion of projects.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties pertinent to the department or unit’s success may be assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Alaska Professional Engineer registration.
  • Minimum ten (10) years experience in mechanical engineering, with experience in the A/E design process preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience with AutoCAD; experience with AutoPlant, SolidWorks, or Revit is preferred.
  • Experience in performing design calculations and preparing equipment or material specifications.
  • Experience sizing piping and ductwork.
  • Experience selecting pumps, valves, and piping components.
  • Experience performing HVAC calculations and selecting air handling equipment.
  • Experience sizing boilers, water heaters, and heat exchangers.
  • Experience creating system diagrams and piping & instrumentation diagrams.
  • Experience preparing graphical representations of designs.
  • Experience with all phases of project management and engineering deliverables.
  • Experience in project delivery within Alaska.
  • Experience in budgeting, scheduling, planning, and design specifications.
  • Ability to travel to remote locations in rural Alaska and arctic environments.
  • Desirable: experience in designing for commercial, state, federal facilities, industrial, oil, and gas facilities.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Environment: Office with occasional site visits.

Physical: Lift/move up to 25 lbs; sit, stand, walk, handle, climb, etc.

Travel: To remote areas, using various transportation modes, 6-12 trips annually.
