Job summary

Global Laser Enrichment is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer in Wilmington, NC to lead detailed mechanical design activities for a first-of-a-kind uranium enrichment program. You will translate engineering concepts into complete 3D CAD models, drawings, assemblies, and BOMs, supporting UF6 gas handling systems.

Role requires NRC Q-clearance eligibility and close collaboration with engineers, manufacturing, and test teams.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years in mechanical design.
  • Proficient with 3D CAD and complex assemblies.
  • Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T.
  • Experience creating manufacturing drawings and BOMs.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis and design release processes.
  • Ability to manage configuration control across designs.
  • Strong collaboration with engineers, vendors, and manufacturing.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain NRC Q-clearance and nuclear site access.
  • Excellent communication and problem solving.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, the Senior Mechanical Designer will lead detailed mechanical design activities supporting Global Laser Enrichment's (GLE) first-of-a-kind uranium enrichment technology program.

Q-Clearance Required or Eligible

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, the Senior Mechanical Designer will lead detailed mechanical design activities supporting Global Laser Enrichment's (GLE) first-of-a-kind uranium enrichment technology program.

The Senior Mechanical Designer will translate engineering concepts, requirements, and design inputs into complete mechanical designs, 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, assemblies, and bills of material. The role will support separator/cascade equipment and UF6 gas handling systems and will work closely with Mechanical Engineers, manufacturing, assembly, and test personnel throughout design, fabrication, and commissioning.

NOTE: This role is subject to the incumbent’s ability to hold and maintain an NRC Q-clearance and nuclear site access.

Roles And Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed mechanical designs from engineering concepts, requirements, and design inputs.
  • Create and manage complex assemblies using advanced top-down and parametric modeling techniques.
  • Produce manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, bills of material, and related design documentation.
  • Apply ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and perform tolerance stack-up evaluations.
  • Resolve packaging, interface, fit-up, access, and manufacturability issues in coordination with responsible engineers.
  • Review and check CAD models and drawings for accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, and compliance with design standards.
  • Coordinate detailed design activities across multiple designers and support design reviews.
  • Support configuration control, design release, CAD standards, model structure, and drawing practices.
  • Work directly with engineers, machinists, fabricators, suppliers, and assembly/test personnel to resolve design and fabrication issues.
  • Support prototype assembly, installation, testing, and design modifications based on lessons learned.
  • Mentor junior designers and provide guidance on CAD methods, drawing practices, and design quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications And Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of mechanical design experience.
  • Advanced proficiency with 3D CAD and complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Experience creating manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of material.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis, configuration control, and design release.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of machining, fabrication, assembly, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to independently develop detailed mechanical solutions while working within engineering requirements and design constraints.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance and nuclear site access.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience developing first-of-a-kind R&D or prototype equipment.
  • Experience with process, gas handling, or similar mechanical equipment.
  • Experience with advanced top-down or parametric CAD modeling methods.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, assembly, installation, and testing.
  • Experience mentoring designers and coordinating work across multiple design contributors.
  • Experience working in nuclear, classified, or highly regulated environments.
