Qualifications

Qualifications

Position Summary: The Senior Mechanical Designer requires providing conceptual and detailed design of systems & components used during project execution of industrial plant design.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Senior Mechanical Designer does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and give direction to other designers and contract personnel.
  • Coordinate long-term design cycles and schedules.
  • Utilize CAD software to create mechanical drawings for the basic and detailed engineering of a Midrex plant.
  • Be proficient in the use of AutoCAD software and related Autodesk products.
  • Take conceptual designs, sketches, and ideas from engineers and senior designers to develop the details necessary for a complete, engineered drawing capable of being used for purchasing, erection in the field, design analysis, etc.
  • Travel to job sites to perform analyses of existing equipment, piping routes, layouts, etc. for use in developing future plans, proposals, etc.
  • Travel to fabrication facilities to perform mechanical inspections of equipment and adherence to designs and tolerances.
  • Travel on business trips and/or field assignments as required to carry out departmental tasks and functions.
  • Perform checking of mechanical drawings for consistency with conceptual ideas, design, sketches, etc.
  • Assist senior designers and engineers by suggesting design changes that might improve the desired results of the design.
  • Work as a teammate with all company departments and employees in all assignments. Work toward building consensus on all assignments by finding solutions which meet the best interests of all parties involved.

Skills/Abilities:

Required:

  • Advanced computer skills including use of Microsoft and Autodesk products.
  • Proficient in use of AutoCAD software for drawing development.
  • Excellent technical writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet schedule and deliverable deadlines.
  • Ability to understand P&ID’s for use in piping design and drawing checking.
  • Ability to supervise field erection activities including supplying technical and installation assistance for equipment used in DR and/or steel industry.

Preferred:

  • Advanced 3D computer modeling skills including use of Aveva E3D and PDMS products.
  • Be proficient in 3D modeling design software and techniques.
  • Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables and developing lists for engineering.
  • Ability to coordinate design schedules.
  • International travel experience.
  • Industrial plant experience.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate Degree in civil and/or mechanical discipline and ten years of hands-on experience in a technical environment, or a minimum of fifteen years of hands-on experience in a technical environment.

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 10% International and Domestic based upon project demands

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
