Job summary

Helmerich & Payne is seeking a Senior Project Engineer - Mechanical Design to lead the development of mechanical systems for FlexRig equipment. The role spans concept through deployment, interfacing with drafting, fabrication, and field teams to deliver reliable, safe drilling solutions.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years in mechanical design, strong CAD skills (Inventor/AutoCAD), and hands-on experience with fabrication and field deployment. Travel 10–15% is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering required or equivalent.
• 7+ years in mechanical design or related engineering roles.
• Ability to lead complex mechanical work from concept to deployment.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and production drawing practices (Autodesk Inventor/AutoCAD/Vault).
• Ability to perform engineering calculations; familiarity with FEA.
• Experience with fabrication, welding, machining, materials, tolerancing, and design for manufacture/assembly.
• Experience integrating mechanical equipment with hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, or controls systems.
• Travel 10–15% as needed.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and development for new rig equipment and modifications to existing FlexRig systems.
• Translate needs into design requirements, scopes, and plans.
• Develop layouts, assemblies, and interfaces using sound design principles.
• Perform analysis including load paths, stresses, tolerances, and weight control.
• Prepare and review engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical reports.
• Coordinate with drafting, fabrication facilities, and suppliers to resolve issues.
• Support prototype builds, testing, commissioning, and field deployments.
• Provide field technical support and document lessons learned for design improvements.
