Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Remote Contract (12 Months)

System One is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a 12-month remote contract position. In this role, you will support conceptual and preliminary design development efforts related to next-generation nuclear fuel handling systems. You’ll be responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical and structural design solutions, CAD models, and detailed engineering drawings to support advanced nuclear technology projects.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop 3D CAD models of conceptual and detailed mechanical designs, with a focus on future scalability and system integration.

• Maintain and manage large, complex assembly models to support multidisciplinary performance analyses.

• Create engineering drawings in compliance with ASME Y14.1 and Y14.5 standards.

• Perform design and drawing checks to ensure accuracy and adherence to drafting standards.

• Revise and update existing CAD models and drawings based on engineering feedback and design changes.

• Ensure accurate documentation and version control within a product data management (PDM) system.

• Define and implement modeling structures for complex mechanical systems.

• Review and suggest improvements to design processes and group standards.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of 7 years of mechanical/structural CAD design experience; SolidWorks strongly preferred.

• Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

• Demonstrated experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).

• Mechanical/machine design experience; background in nuclear fuel handling or similar highly regulated industries is a plus.

• Proficiency in using PDM systems.

• Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing concurrent tasks independently.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Creative problem solver with strong analytical skills.

• Experience in nuclear design is preferred, but not required.

Work Requirements:

• Remote work environment; must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and perform computer-based tasks for >8 hrs/day.

• Occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs.

• Minimal travel (0–5%).
