Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Remote Contract (12 Months)
System One is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a 12-month remote contract position. In this role, you will support conceptual and preliminary design development efforts related to next-generation nuclear fuel handling systems. You’ll be responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical and structural design solutions, CAD models, and detailed engineering drawings to support advanced nuclear technology projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop 3D CAD models of conceptual and detailed mechanical designs, with a focus on future scalability and system integration.
Maintain and manage large, complex assembly models to support multidisciplinary performance analyses.
Create engineering drawings in compliance with ASME Y14.1 and Y14.5 standards.
Perform design and drawing checks to ensure accuracy and adherence to drafting standards.
Revise and update existing CAD models and drawings based on engineering feedback and design changes.
Ensure accurate documentation and version control within a product data management (PDM) system.
Define and implement modeling structures for complex mechanical systems.
Review and suggest improvements to design processes and group standards.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 7 years of mechanical/structural CAD design experience; SolidWorks strongly preferred.
Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Demonstrated experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
Mechanical/machine design experience; background in nuclear fuel handling or similar highly regulated industries is a plus.
Proficiency in using PDM systems.
Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing concurrent tasks independently.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Creative problem solver with strong analytical skills.
Experience in nuclear design is preferred, but not required.
Work Requirements:
Remote work environment; must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and perform computer-based tasks for >8 hrs/day.
Occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs.
Minimal travel (0–5%).
