Job summary

Rivian seeks a Mechanical Test Technician in Normal, IL to conduct sophisticated shock and vibration tests on Li-ion battery modules and packs. You will operate advanced test equipment, analyze data, and work with engineers to push battery tech forward.

The role demands a 2-year technical degree in mechanical tech, 5+ years in automotive/battery testing, and hands-on experience with vibration test tools and data acquisition. Travel is ~10%.

Qualifications

• 2-year technical degree in mechanical technology field.
• Minimum 5 years automotive or battery experience in related field.
• Demonstrated knowledge of automated battery test equipment and test methods preferred.
• Familiar with automotive test tools such as Vector CANoe/CANape, Tracetronic ECU-Test, Vehicle SPI.
• Expertise in data acquisition and instrumentation (accelerometers, strain gauges, thermocouples).
• Strong understanding of high voltage safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Execute complex mechanical shock and vibration test profiles for Li-ion battery modules and packs.
• Support facility startup operations for commissioning and integration of battery test systems.
• Support characterization of control system behaviors.
• Follow detailed drawings and test procedures with high attention to detail.
• Develop detailed test outlines and methods.
• Collaborate with test engineers to troubleshoot hardware integration and sensor signals in real time.
• Design and fabricate custom mechanical test fixtures and instrumentation setups.
• Document all test observations and collect required data.
• Provide feedback on battery failure modes to Development/Validation Engineers.
