Job summary

Aegis Worldwide is seeking an experienced Materials Engineer in Michigan to serve as a technical SME for engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and supplier teams. The role focuses on metals, metallurgy, heat treatment, machining, and performance of precision components such as gears and splines.

You will evaluate material selection, heat treatment impacts on strength and wear, review drawings and tolerances, and collaborate with design and suppliers to improve manufacturability and ensure

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in materials/metallurgical/mechanical/manufacturing engineering or a related field.
• 10+ years hands-on manufacturing engineering experience.
• Strong metals knowledge: steels, aluminum, cast iron.
• Experience with heat treatment and its impact on strength, hardness, distortion and performance.
• Experience with gears, splines, powertrain components.
• Understanding of machining and manufacturing processes.
• Experience with root cause analysis of material failures.
• Ability to read drawings, GD&T, tolerances, and material specs.
• Experience working with suppliers on technical issues.
• CAD/CAM experience preferred.
• Lean/Six Sigma or continuous improvement experience a plus.

Responsibilities

• Serve as technical expert for materials, metallurgy, and heat treatment.
• Support material selection for new and existing components.
• Evaluate material performance during machining and heat treatment.
• Support gears, splines, shafts, and other rotating parts.
• Troubleshoot material and manufacturing issues including wear and distortion.
• Perform root cause and failure analysis on components.
• Provide input on heat treatment processes (carburizing, nitriding, induction hardening, stress relieving).
• Review drawings, tolerances, GD&T and material specs; advise on manufacturability.
• Collaborate with Design Engineering to improve manufacturability and material selection.
• Work with suppliers to resolve material, manufacturing, and quality concerns.
• Evaluate supplier processes, testing capabilities, and controls.
• Support supplier technical reviews, RFQs, PPAPs, capability studies, and process validation.
• Provide input for make/buy decisions and cost-reduction opportunities.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Purchasing, and Operations.
