Job summary

CarMax seeks a Senior Corporate Counsel focused on Marketing and Product to guide advertising, promotions, and product initiatives at the Richmond, VA home office. You will provide strategic legal advice, assess risk, and support marketing teams across campaigns, sponsorships, and licensing.

The role requires a J.D., active U.S. bar admission, and 8+ years of relevant experience in regulated consumer products or automotive contexts. Strong communication and leadership are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Must have a law degree and be in good standing with a U.S. bar.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant legal experience in a regulated industry (ideally automotive).
• Experience advising on marketing, product initiatives, and related contracts (licensing, sponsorships, influencer agreements).
• Ability to communicate complex legal developments to internal stakeholders at all levels.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and leadership skills for cross‑functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Lead legal counsel on marketing and product matters, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws (UDAP, advertising, privacy).
• Advise marketing and product teams on legal obligations and risks for campaigns and initiatives.
• Support commercial transactions teams on marketing/advertising contracts and partnerships.
• Collaborate with Compliance, Government Affairs, and other legal members on regulatory developments.
• Manage special projects and provide trademark/IP support.
