Job Summary

The University of Michigan Center for Innovation in Detroit is seeking a qualified Market Research Analyst Senior, who will lead research projects that inform strategic decision-making, contribute to the understanding of labor market trends and patterns, and support internal unit-level benchmarking, knowledge management, and record-keeping infrastructure. In this important role, the analyst will develop qualitative and quantitative research to inform the center's portfolio and strategic programs. You will have strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to interpret large amounts of data and translate findings into relevant, understandable insights. You will also manage partnerships with third-party research agencies. Working at UMCI will provide you with the rather unique experiences of working for U-M in the Detroit ecosystem, supporting faculty and staff who are engaged in master's level education, workforce development, and world-class K-12 STEAM instruction, as well as advancing regional job creation and innovation strategies.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake market research and analysis of secondary sources, including labor market and economic trends, government and third-party data, and competitive landscapes, to inform UMCI educational offerings and programming, market and marketing communications, content, and B2B partnership strategies.
  • You will calibrate research efforts based on the scope of the problem and available timelines to deliver clear, actionable insights.
  • Lead end-to-end primary research, including framing objectives and defining appropriate qualitative and quantitative methodologies. This includes recruiting, fielding, monitoring, and reporting on various studies to inform portfolio decisions and initiative demand.
  • Maintain and disseminate knowledge of industry trends and serve as an expert resource for the center and partners across U-M, managing an internal knowledge center for all benchmarking and research materials.
  • Manage market research and analysis operations, including project flow and intake requests.
  • Manage market and data related relationships and project work between UMCI, university partners, and third-party research agencies, including assistance with proposal development, scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Synthesize and translate complex research findings into clear, actionable insights and reports tailored for various audiences, from peers, industry partners and senior leadership, to represent student and learner interests and influence strategic direction.
  • Incorporate data visualization tools and methodologies to ensure information is presented in clear, easy-to-understand formats.
  • Support internal unit-level benchmarking, knowledge management, and record-keeping infrastructure.
  • Supervise student fellows working on market research and analysis projects.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in market research, data analytics, business intelligence, or data science
  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, market research, information management, or a related field
  • Experience interpreting large amounts of data using statistical methods
  • Knowledge of statistical packages (e.g., Python, R, SPSS, SAS)
  • Knowledge of data collection methods (polls, focus groups, surveys)
  • Knowledge and working familiarity with data visualization tools and techniques
  • Ability to learn and appropriately use new technologies to improve processes, communication, and outcomes, including AI-enabled tools where relevant to the role, consistent with university policy and job responsibilities
  • Knowledge and familiarity with labor and economic market research and techniques, including sector and cluster analysis, is preferred
